Something that any game engine has and PB don't have...
« on: September 26, 2018, 02:29:05 PM »
I know that I'm a little irritating with this topic and also I named this suggestion multiple times but...
GM has an exe maker, Unity has an exe maker, Unreal Engine has an exe maker, Godot has an exe maker.
Why Platform Builder hasn't an exe maker, I mean if you can send to TingThing your game and convert it to a standalone, why this process can't be automatized in game.

I know TingThing don't want problems with copyright, but a standalone game that has copyrighted content must not affect the program which has been used to create it. Also, Platform Builder has some copyrighted built-in resources that are paid/available for use only in PB, so, if they are PB built-in resources, the exe maker for PB can detect them easily, and make the user replace these items to export it.

I know that Platform Builder is good, but, an exe maker will make it even better.
Sorry because my English is not very good because I'm Spanish ;) :P

The biggest reason that Platform Builder doesn't have this is because I don't know how to do it. Such a feature would require some serious external programming, because Game Maker doesn't supply any such function to compile a collection of files into a game package.

Oh. Maybe you should research it.

Well, PB originally had a player, you only required to insert the files for the PB-player's access, try to do that automatically.

It's time to think about it. If you can transform an entire project into a simple file for backup, I think you can perfectly create an standalone maker.

I want an EXE maker too but I think that Ting_Thing explained it very clear about why he can't do it yet. It will require some new kind of learning and for me, it takes too long even to make small and simple things... He already has made a lot of things for PB that he haven't created previously. Custom stuff requires a lot of text reading and writing and Explore section is somehow connected with his own server, includes uploading, confirming, downloading, executing - it is not easy to do. But those was just my few examples.  :)

Maybe Ting_Thing wants to work on PB and have some more important things to add.  ::)  A lot of you have done a lot of suggestions but now how he is going to accept it all if he must learn a totally new programming. He can't work with PB in the same time...

You have a point Alley. Ting has made it clear. And making exe's through him seems fair enough. Just send the files to Ting, then he'll quickly create the exe and send it back.

Ahh... The day when the UPE will be out, it'll be like...like...amazing! We'll even get to make exe's on our own!

The idea of Platform Builder was not to make it like another Unity, Unreal Engine, Game Maker, etc. The idea was to make it something like Nintendo's Super Mario Maker. The focus and purpose and audience is different.

Over all these years, Platform Builder has grown enough where it is somewhere between... say... Unity and Super Mario Maker. If I could do an export I would. I even researched it one time and realized that it would be very unlikely to ever be possible for my skills.

With the coming release of the UPE, there will finally be a way to export. Theoretically a person could even export to other devices like a tablet or HTML or Nintendo Switch with enough time and money and knowhow (I worked PB on anything other than PC).

is it actually possible to port PB games onto the switch?

I wonder if this is foreshadowing Platform Builder on the switch?  ;)

Ha! That would be awesome. Tell you what: send me $799 for the Switch export I would need to buy and I'll release Platform Builder on the Switch! j/k.

But with Game Maker, it is possible to publish to the Switch store now. So theoretically, it could be done.

Can you export to wii u? If so, how much would that cost? And how would you handle PBX, ogg, png files with out a file explorer on both the wii u and switch's part?

Wait, even bigger! What was that about HTML??? Could that mean... NO WAY! PB games online??? I actually looked up a flash possibility, but that is impossible. Because you have to code with flash code... So, it would be cool to run PB games online. How much would that cost?

The difficulty with HTML is that you can't do as much with files. It is also a slower with colorization. This would cripple Platform Builder in some important ways.

And no, you cannot export to the Wii U with Game Maker.
