If we could import GIF's as sprites, what would that do? A LOT! Imagine! Giving visual tutorials without needing to explain what to do in boring, wordy text!

you can already make animated sprites. if anything, GIF only has 256 color palette, so it'd be a downgrade.

Ah. Well, I wasn't aware of that. I did happen to find a GIF to spritesheet converter which would be very useful.

I mean, go for it if that works for you. you're likely not going to spend all those colors on your sprites anyway

I don't mean replacing PNG with GIF, but rather just making GIF an option.
