So I know that we aren't allowed to publish any games with copyrighted content. But if the copyrighted content is replaced with something that looks similar are we allowed then to publish the games/sandbox levels like this?
-
If it looks too close to the original, it's not accepted. Alley used a completely custom made Airship tileset that ThingThing took down because it closely resembled a SMB3 tileset. So, don't pick stuff that looks close to the original.
-
Close is actually a relative word, also the Alley's tileset was, indeed, the mario's one, not just similar. I don't think similarity is bad just if the game is not a copy, or if that similarity is not repeated over the all game. TingThing may answer this better.

I agree with the last sentence Antikore used.

No offense but ASM's goomba-like enemies are, well, goombas.

Apparently you didn't pick up on the de-marionizing process I've been doing. If you've been reading ASM updates, you'd know that those goombas (I called them jombos) are erased from ASM almost completely. They might appear sometimes, but, they're gone. Replaced by Ballders. Those blue balls that roll around back and fourth are the jombo replacement. And BTW, the jombos didn't look near at all like an original goomba. Comparing all of the goomba sprites, it resembles goombas, but falls far short.

Ok, that's good. Thanks for correcting me, my apologizes.

But don't get me wrong, ASM will retain many aspects taken from Mario gameplay. But will not resemble original graphics at all. I want ASM to be as original as possible while keeping it's mario-like aspects that it was originally intended to have.

Except the RUN KEY SADLY

I'm thinking about making the run button optional.

To be honest, you scared the s**t out of me with this post by yours. :D I just opened PB to see if my game at Explore is messed up in "Incoming Forces" and "Weaponry Patrol" because of ripping out the whole file but everything was working okay.
I think you are talking about times when Ting_Thing contacted me with a request that he make some edits on the sheet I have used to be more legal and fit with PB look. It was a very good offer and alternative to be good for me and considering legal requirements also. ::) I would say those still look a bit like from SMB and actually a whole PB still looks a bit similar with SMB so no one bans any similarities (at least for now yet).
-
Well, I said "too close." If you look at the edited ones that are now within PB, they do not closely resemble SMB3. SMB3 had smaller sets if I'm not mistaken, and PB's look vastly different. Do I need to put up a screenshot?
When I say too close, I mean looking nearly identical.
