Title: Setting Up Start Location
Post by: Wizard Indie Games on September 14, 2020, 10:02:53 AM
Could someone please explain how to set up the start location for a game that does not use overworlds?

Go to the title screen editor>settings>start location and you choose your level.

Thanks but when I try to run the game it still says the start location of the course is not specified properly.

Also, when attempting to set it up it want me to define a spawn id.

you're using advanced mode, that means every player spawn needs to be connected with an ID.

just like when using overworlds, find an area you need and define an ID (you can leave it at 1. just keep in mind you cannot have two same ID's in one area). make sure you have that character in said area, obviously

Thanks. I think it didn't like the spawn ID being text. I changed it to a number and it worked.

that's not right, it should work with text as well...
whatever. if it works, right?

Spawn IDs are case sensitive, just a note, could be that

I've come back to start creating some games

but when testing my old games I also find the message pop-up that there is no starting point.
My game does use an overworld. I tried setting my overworld (and even a standard level) as my starting point but the UI doesn't seem to allow me to do it.

How do I modify my game so it starts at the overworld screen?

@saiwong3268 when choosing the start world PB will ask the spawn id to use, you enter the one you defined for the start location you want to use. (spawn ids are explained section 7 of the ingame manual)
Welcome back btw, we're glad you're here. Did you seen my dm?

section 7 is for Advanced mode, but I've not used Advanced mode so never setup any IDs
how do I get things to work in "normal/starter" mode ?

there are bigger issues warrior.

If there is no fix for this then games are broken in normal mode.
This would severely impact new users to this product as they cannot create and run their games.

New users need time to learn the product so won't be jumping into advanced mode straight away. However this bug stops them from running any of their games.

chill out man i was just joking since 50% users including all of the 9 legends use advanced
however since in normal there is no ids you should just have to set a spawnpoint on the start world
however if you send your pbx to me in dms i will see whats wrong

@saiwong3268 I'd be happy to help you out. You can DM me on Discord. I'm on Antikore's Platform Builder server called Plugger's Zone. You can find me and DM me there. That is, if I'm not on your friends list. I don't remember if you're on my friends list or not, sadly.

@warrior No offense, but I find your DK avatar to be rather cringy. I still miss your original roblox avatar.

This is offtopic plus you should not talk about other people being cringeworthy unless you remove the video in your bio. Plus this avatar was literally just a oof head, im a DK fanboy, and you havent zoomed in enough to see the text. (however it's pretty normal since the text is so small the only way to know it is to intentionally zoom in to 500% or already have seen the pic so im putting it for you below).

Just moderating myself for one time because after all I assume not everyone use advanced.

I finally managed to get my game to work.

For me, just setting the Start Location didn't work for me. I need to do an extra step....

Previously when I started the game I didn't choose my old game data but instead chose a new game slot but that didn't work.

What I found to work was having to delete all previous game data from all game slots and start from scratch.

So for users to get things to work, setup the Start Location and delete all your old game data

to setup Start Location
Menu -> Edit Game Screens -> Title Screen

then choose Settings -> Start Location

I've updated my game "Jet Set Manic Adventure" in the Explore section and it seems to be  working now. Could everyone give it a test to check it is all working and give me feedback if something is not running correctly

... so now off to create some new games ....  hooray !!!

@saiwong3268 thats what we tried to tell you
however I shall test the update now since my sfv installation takes 2h

well I cant play it since creating new file redirects to title.

Did you uninstall old version and reinstall new version ?

Also delete all game save files (reinstalling game might do this automatically)

Yeah of course, everything you mention here are basic things that everyone can do.

to clarify you went to the "Explore" section of Platform Builder
and ran the latest version of "Jet Set Manic Adventure"
chose "New Game"

so at this point did the game just return back to Title screen and didn't allow you to choose a new game slot

or

did it allow you to choose a new game slot and once chosen it returned to the Title screen

This is odd since I can run my game from the Explore section perfectly and have no issues. So I suspect that there might be other issues at play.

Yeah pretty much it, except strating new game returns to title without creating the savefile (music is also cut). I checked my file integrity and it persists, but it looks alot like a local anomaly to me. Did anyone else tried playing it?

@warrior Just so you know, (just for clarity) checking file integrity only makes sure that you have all of the files you need for your game to work. That's it. And PB doesn't have many files, just the exe, and an extractor program and...well, that's pretty much it. So checking file integrity I doubt would help much.

Looks like instead of being helpful and answering simple questions, you decided to strike on everyone by highlighting every minor error.

@warrior Most of the time when I don't answer a question I don't have a really good answer.
And I was just trying to clarify things. That's it.

What if you tried to be helpful? You could get back you past glory, do you want that or not?

@warrior I can't argue with you that I haven't been that helpful lately, and it's mostly because other than these fourms, I'm very disconnected from PB, and I help when I can, but I've just not really checked much into solving problems, since other people seem to be fine answering questions. Though there is something I have not stated, which is that PB's been broken, and I did check for file integrity yesterday and apparently when I was messing with Re-Shade files, I apparently erased a PB file, so it did re-download the file, and I haven't tested to see if PB works. I did this to do saiwong a favor in testing his game like I said I would. Me not being able to open PB has discouraged me from looking into things somewhat, which is one reason I haven't been super helpful here. If I know how to do something already, and I'm sure it works, then I'll give my advice, but if not, I usually don't say anything to help resolve the problem. I'm sorry about this, and I'll do better in the future. ;) Thx, Warrior.

Thanks :D

Anyways, I think actually using simple mode is quite stupid. Basically cuz Simple and Advanced mode are quite similar, and its not really harder to use Advanced Mode, so Simple Mode is just... limiting.

@saiwong3268 you see? thats why you should use advanced, it allows to use multiple spawns in a single level. You could use this for multiple rooms in a single level, for example (maybe a maze or something)
Anyway since I can't play Jet Sec Manic now imma play Multitap instead (btw @leoplays72 can you make a thread so it can get featured on explore) Edit: the latest update has put a undefined spawnpoint error at the beginning so we can't play it apparently, I'm trying to contact leoplays72 so he can fix this.
Edit 2: He responded, apparently it's due to the addition of a system to go back to world 1 from world 2, the spawn ids have been probably messed up. Will edit this once it's fixed.
