Light Blocks

I want to be able to create blocks that emit light. In custom blocks, I'd like to set how strong the light is. I want these options:
Very LightLightMediumStrongVery
Strong
Including colored lights!

it's not a bad idea, but I think you can do that already.
a simple, black (or differently colored) sprite with higher transparency put over a lighted area could work.

That's true, but it's not going to work for dark areas.
