Making Slopes with the Default Ground Tileset

I am having trouble making slopes.  I have tried using the Smart tool but still can't get it. Is there a trick to this?

I understand you can't choose the slope tile. I remember having the same issue. it's something weird with the item box, it gets stuck sometimes.
go to the main menu, then back in to your project and that should resolve the problem
