Efficient Tiling
« on: November 18, 2019, 08:34:27 PM »
In this little guide, I will take you through essentials for tiling in Platform Builder.
Tiling is a crucial skill to master, as not understanding how it works can result in confusion, wasted time, and frustration.
Let's begin!  ;D

I | TYPES OF TILES

First off, let's examine what types of tiles we have to work with.

  • Unlike solid tiles, you can walk through semi-solids. You can jump on them from below, but you can't drop down them.
  • Solid tiles are self-explanatory. They're going to be your base building material.
  • Slopes are a great tool to make your levels more interesting. Try not to overdo them, leave some flat surface for better platforming.
  • Exp. semi-solids allow you to make platforms or pillars quickly.
  • You'll probably find Solid Rounded kind the least useful. They can work as floating islands. Don't use them as your main floor (beneath the pit).
  • Use this exclusively for filling in empty spaces.
  • Work similarly to Solid Rounded, but are open from the bottom. If you want to make quick foundations, use these.

II | SMART TOOL

To use your smart tool, click on the button or use this shortcut: Z.

This tool automatically matches tiles when you place them, trying to give the best result.
That way you don't have to constantly swap between different pieces,
and it saves loads of time compared to placing them manually.

SMART OFF                           SMART ON

Smart tool is great and all, but use it with caution. To use Smart effectively, you need to know when to turn it off.

Do not use Smart when solids and semi-solids are next to each other, otherwise it might break.
In this instance, you need to turn Smart off and place your pieces manually.

When making slopes, make sure to choose a slope tile (it doesn't matter which one).
Don't place more than three tiles in a row, because it will break.

NOTE: This topic is not finished. I'll finish it later, so keep waiting. :)

I know this isn't finished yet, but just as a heads up notice, don't forget to include upload tiles!

Don't forget the platforms where you can duck to go down. Below the rounded platforms
